When I first started raising backyard chickens, I thought it would be simple. I was wrong.
I got twelve baby chicks from an auction—and every single one turned out to be a rooster. Needless to say, those roosters went right back to the auction house, and we started over. This time, we ordered baby chicksfrom a hatchery instead of taking our chances.
When we finally got hens, the waiting began.
It takes time before chickens start laying eggs. Those first weeks of raising chicks—feeding them, keeping their brooder warm, and watching them grow—felt endless when you’re checking the nesting boxes every day, hoping for that first egg.
But that’s the reality of raising backyard chickens.
There’s a learning curve, and it’s steeper than you might expect. You quickly realize that not all chicks are created equal, that where you get them matters, and that patience is a big part of the process.
Every mistake teaches you something. Every success makes you a better chicken keeper.
If you're thinking about starting your own flock, just know this: it won’t be as simple as you imagine—but it will absolutely be worth it. It also won't be as hard as you might think.
The eggs taste better when you’ve raised the hens yourself. And the connection to your food, your land, and farm life becomes something real—something you can’t fully understand until you experience it.
Raising backyard chickens is incredibly rewarding, but it comes with challenges that many beginners don’t expect.
From choosing the right chicks to learning daily care routines and waiting for eggs, there is more involved than most people realize.
Starting with the wrong flock taught me quickly that sourcing your chicks matters.
Patience is essential when waiting for eggs, and every mistake along the way becomes part of the learning process that shapes you into a better chicken keeper.
