We recently had the opportunity to acquire a stunning collection of decorative shoes from an estate sale—porcelain, ceramic, resin, and more, each one a unique piece with its own story.

Walking through collections like this always makes me wonder: which shoe was her favorite? Did she spend years hunting for the perfect piece? What drew her to this particular hobby?

Estate sales have a way of introducing us to collections we never would have thought to pursue on our own. Every acquisition teaches us something new about the people who came before us and the passions that shaped their lives.

The History Behind Decorative Shoe Collecting

The hobby of collecting decorative shoes took off during the Victorian era, driven by a shift in how people traveled and experienced the world.

As the railway system expanded, working-class families gained access to travel in ways they never had before. Novelty items soon became treasured souvenirs—small reminders of places visited and experiences shared.

Artists recognized the appeal and began creating decorative shoes from glass, porcelain, wood, and ceramic. These miniature pieces became art forms in their own right, combining craftsmanship with creativity.

By the 1990s, resin emerged as a popular material, making production more accessible and allowing for even more variety in design and detail.

Why Decorative Shoes Still Matter Today

Decorative shoes continue to appeal to a wide range of collectors—fashion lovers, history enthusiasts, and those who simply appreciate craftsmanship.

They’re small enough to display beautifully on a shelf or in a curio cabinet, yet detailed enough to stand out. Every color, pattern, and design tells a story, whether it’s a delicate porcelain piece or a more playful resin creation.

There’s something special about holding a piece of someone else’s collection and imagining the joy it once brought them. That, more than anything, is the real treasure of estate sales.

Moments like these are part of why we do what we do at ChickenMash Farm—whether it’s creating something by hand or giving carefully chosen pieces a second life, each one carries a story worth sharing.
