One of my favorite things to find while sourcing is vintage cookbooks. At first glance, they may seem like ordinary books, but I've come to realize they're often much more than that. Tucked between the pages you sometimes find handwritten notes, recipe cards, grocery lists, and small reminders from everyday life.
Some pages are stained from recipes that were made again and again. Others have corners turned down or notes scribbled in the margins.
Those little details tell a story.
One of my favorite recipes is one that came directly from my grandma. It's a simple recipe for pizzelles, written in her own handwriting.
Every time I look at it, I think about family gatherings, holidays, and the people who sat around her table.
That's what makes vintage cookbooks so special to me. They're more than collections of recipes. They're records of family traditions, favorite meals, and moments shared together.
When I find a cookbook at an estate sale, I often wonder who owned it. Which recipe was their favorite? Did they make meals for a large family? Did they clip recipes from newspapers and tuck them between the pages? Even when we don't know the answers, the evidence is still there. A worn cover. A handwritten note. A splash of vanilla on a favorite page.
This is the pizzelle recipe my grandmother passed down to our family. Seeing it in her handwriting makes it even more meaningful to me.
As the years go by, I've come to appreciate recipes for more than the food they produce.
They connect us to the people who came before us. That's one reason I enjoy finding vintage cookbooks and recipe collections. They remind me that ordinary things often become the most treasured over time. Some families pass down heirloom furniture or jewelry. Others pass down recipes.
And sometimes a simple recipe card written in a grandmother's handwriting becomes one of the most meaningful heirlooms of all.
