There’s something special about vintage brooches. They’re tiny treasures that carry stories—whispers of the people who wore them, the occasions they dressed up for, and the moments they felt just a little more put together.
That love for small, meaningful details is something that runs through everything we do at Chickenmash Farm. Whether it’s something handmade or a piece we’ve found tucked away at an estate sale, we’re always drawn to items that feel like they’ve lived a life before us.
My grandmother understood this better than anyone. She had a gift for making the ordinary feel extraordinary.
I can still picture her in jeans and a sweatshirt—something most grandmothers wouldn’t have worn back then—but she always paired it with a perfectly manicured nails, stylish earrings, a layered necklace, and a brooch that fit the mood.
She looked like she had stepped out of a classic film, even when she was just running errands. She was ahead of her time and unapologetically herself. And she showed me that style isn’t about having a closet full of expensive clothes—it’s about how you layer, how you accessorize, and how you add that one detail that pulls everything together.
That’s why I find myself drawn to vintage brooches whenever I’m out sourcing.
At estate sales, antique shops, and flea markets, I always slow down when I come across them. I’ll pick one up, turn it over in my hands, and study the craftsmanship. I start to wonder who once wore it and what it meant to them.
Was it a gift? A favorite piece they reached for again and again? Something they wore on special occasions? Each one feels like a small window into someone else’s life.
One of the things I love most about vintage brooches is how versatile they are.
Pin one to a sweater and it instantly elevates a simple outfit. Add one to a denim jacket, and it brings in personality and texture. Even something as simple as a hat can feel more intentional with the right brooch catching the light.
It’s an easy way to layer your look, add character, and create a style that feels personal without overthinking it.
Collecting vintage costume jewelry has become my way of honoring everything my grandmother showed me—that style is about confidence, creativity, and attention to detail.
And in many ways, that same mindset carries into everything we do at Chickenmash Farm. From the pieces we carefully choose to bring home to the items we make by hand, it all comes back to appreciating the small details and the stories behind them.
Every brooch is a reminder that something simple can still feel meaningful—that a single, well-chosen piece can say more than anything else.
