Why We Make Our Botanical Balm the Slow Way

This is one of those products that started out of necessity.

Years ago, when our goat Goldie injured her shoulder, we were doing everything we could to care for her and keep her comfortable. That was when we started working more intentionally with herbs like comfrey and calendula.

Over time, what we made for our animals became something we also kept on hand for ourselves. It’s now a staple here on the farm.

Where It Begins

Every jar of our botanical balm starts the same way—with time.

We use a solar infusion process that takes about six weeks. Organic comfrey and calendula are placed in olive oil and set in a sunny window or outside, where the warmth of the sun slowly draws out the properties of the plants.

We give the jars a gentle shake each day and simply let time do the work.

It’s not a fast process, but it’s one we believe in.

Why We Use a Solar Infusion

Rather than using high heat, which can be harsh on herbs, we let the sun do the work slowly. The result is an oil that feels richer and more connected to the plants themselves.

It’s a quieter way of doing things, but one that fits how we approach everything here on the farm.

The Herbs Behind It

We chose comfrey and calendula very intentionally.

Comfrey has a long history of being used to support the skin, especially for minor scrapes and everyday wear and tear. Calendula is known for its calming nature and is often used for irritated or sensitive skin.

Together, they create a simple but effective combination that we’ve come to rely on over time.

Finished Simply

Once the oil has finished infusing, we strain it and blend it with beeswax to create a smooth, protective balm. We also include small amounts of tea tree oil, vitamin E, and lavender to round it out.

Nothing complicated—just ingredients we trust and use ourselves.

A Staple on the Farm

This balm has become something we keep within reach at all times.

It started with caring for one of our goats, but it’s now something we reach for in everyday life—for dry hands, small scrapes, and the little things that come with working outdoors.

Like so many things here, it’s simple, but it’s been useful in more ways than we expected.

That’s really the heart behind it—making something with care, using it ourselves, and sharing it because it’s become part of our daily routine.

That same mindset carries into everything we do at Chickenmash Farm, from the way we care for our animals to the things we create and share.
