Slowing Down With a Good Book

I love summer reading. When it's hot outside, sometimes the best thing to do is stop for a while and sit with a good book. There is something relaxing about soaking up the sunshine, feeling the warm air, and getting lost in a story.

After chores are finished and everything slows down, a good book is often exactly what I need. I recently finished If I Gain the World by Linda Nichols and have just started The Scarlet Star by Jennifer Kropf.

A Book That Made Me Stop and Think

The part that stayed with me most in If I Gain the World was when Daniel Monroe returns home to Kentucky for his uncle's funeral.

Daniel had spent his life pursuing wealth, fame, and success. While back home, he reflects on his uncle's life. His uncle spent his entire life in the same small community, working a regular job, coming home, going to church, and living a simple routine day after day.

What struck Daniel was that his uncle seemed genuinely happy and fulfilled without chasing the things Daniel thought would bring satisfaction. That part made me stop and reflect on my own life.

I found myself thinking about our small goat farm in Ohio and how much I enjoy the life we've built here. I like quiet evenings on the back deck with a book. I appreciate the animals, the slower pace, and the simple routines that make up everyday life.

Years ago, a friend said something I've never forgotten:

"If we all liked the same thing, there wouldn't be enough to go around."

The older I get, the more I understand that. It’s okay to enjoy life in the way that fits you best. Not everyone wants the same things, and that's perfectly alright.

What I'm Reading Next

I just started The Scarlet Star by Jennifer Kropf.

I've always enjoyed fantasy, adventure, and Christian fiction, and this book seems to have a little of all three. It's still early, but I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

I'm also hoping it captures some of the feeling I found in The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, which remains one of my all-time favorite series.

For now, I'll keep reading, enjoying the slower pace of summer, and making the most of these warm evenings before they're gone.
